Hi!!

I went today to a piano dealer and found a Steigerman XU110s piano for 3000$. Is that a good price? Is Steigerman any good? It sounded pretty well but I am a bit confused and I do not know if it bad that Steigerman is a chinese stencil? Does it matter? How would be the life of the piano??

My other candiate now is a Kawai CE7 from 1997 at 3600$..... considering that the Steigerman is new and the Kawai is 11 years old, which one would you recommend?

I have already discarder the Young Chang as it missing some note!!!

Help please!!

The CE7 was an expectional Kawai piano and perhaps as good or even better than the Steigerman. Too bad they don't build them like that anymore...

Play them both and perhaps have a tech give you a second opinion.

I mean 'third'.

[counting your Valentine's *second* voice..]

Norbert,

You said "even better than the Steigerman".... does it mean that the Steigerman is good? I really like ti sound but I am worried that as it is a chinese stencil it will not survive well the Canadian weather (changes in humidity....)..... what do you think?

SoniaGB,

Buy or borrow the Piano Book by Larry Fine if you have not already.

The model Kawai CE7 is one of Kawais finest and leaps above the model of Steigerman (Beijing Xhinghui by model#) that you are looking at even if from 1997.

Although true that Steigerman is a stencil and has used various builders over the years, you may find Fine's comments interesting.

Steigerman Premium by Hailun is far better even if only on the market for a few years.

Go for the Kawai

Frank,

Thanks a lot for your comments!!..... do you think the price of 3600$ (tax included) is a good price for the CE7 Kawai? I have read in the forum that you should be able to bargain quite a lot on the price of the pianos, but the dealer seemed pretty unflexible about reducing further the price.....

Hi SoniaGB, I live in your area and recently shopped for a baby grand, you can PM me (french or english) if you want to talk about nearby dealers or have a look at my copy of the piano book since it's not available in local libraries.

If you haven't been to Bolduc, Musique Gagné, Musique Richard, musique beaudoin and Denis musique, I suggest you do (especially bolduc, my favorite place)

I tried pianos at Musique Gagné and was horrified. Their new Young Changs had sticking keys and out of tune unisons. So did all their other pianos, but I mention the Young Changs because they're OK pianos and deserve better. Musique Richard keeps all their pianos out of tune on the floor, although the keys all work. If you ask, they'll have one tuned in a week or so. Denis Musique has an open plan, so that if someone cuts loose on the drum kits you can't hear anything anywhere in the store. Bolduc is of course great, but it's sad that the other dealers are so awful, since it would be nice to be able to tell something about the pianos without having to go to Montreal or Toronto.
