Hi Everyone--

I've been on quite the adventure with the piano search the past month and a half, first looking for an upright, then a grand, then a baby grand, then back to an upright. I wasn't having much luck until I got a lead on a private party used Charles Walter Studio piano (2003) last night, and headed out to see it this morning. The piano was in immaculate condition and offered at a fantastic price--the owners knew they were selling low, but needed it to move and were happy to see it go to a musician's house--so I bought it on the spot. I'm working out delivery right now and hope to have the piano in its new home by the weekend.

SOOOOO looking forward to playing this beauty more once I have it here. It's clearly been well-loved and maintained over the years. I've heard so many good things about Charles Walters, but hadn't had a chance to play one in such good condition until now.

All I can say is: Wow!

I was initially nervous about having to "settle" for an upright rather than a small grand, given my budget limitations (and my admitted ignorance about how good a good upright could really be). But no more. This piano is extraordinarily musical and responsive and satisfying to play.

Question for the Charles Walter crowd: How can I tell if the action is Renner or Charles Walter? It doesn't really matter, since I like how the action in this piano responds to my playing... I guess I just want to know out of curiosity. I understand it was possible to upgrade to Renner action with this model when new.

ps--I got so excited when I sat down to play that I forgot to take a pic of the whole piano, but there are a couple of photos here:

The Renner action will say Renner on it and will be impossible to miss.

Your photo looks just like the current Walter action (China-spec; not the Langer action that they used to use), and is exactly the same as mine. My dealer says the Walter action is better than the Renner one, and he won't even order Walters with a Renner action anymore; apparently some screws come loose on the Renner actions, and he is tired of servicing them.

Place that piano at the right distance from the wall, close your eyes, and it will feel and sound better than most grands anyway. smile
