Any Heroes of Might and Magic fans here? HoMM 3 is one of my all time favorite games and pretty much the only game from that era that I still play on a regular basis.

Dragon Quest 3 is one of my favorites. It has nice music as well.

Among arcade games, Atari's [b]Tempest[/b] from 1981. I was able to find an excellent-condition cabinet and convince my wife to let me buy it. (She regrets it. I love it!)

Among childhood PC games: [b]Wizardry[/b] and [b]The Bard's Tale[/b] on the Apple II, each of which loom large in my memory, with great affection.

Among 21st century games, I'd have a hard time choosing between [b]Mass Effect 2[/b], and [b]Portal[/b], and [b]Red Dead Redemption[/b], and [b]Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare[/b]. The PS4 / Xbox 360 generation was amazing.

I think DOTA 2. If to talk just about gameplay, that is a good game. But community is too low to stay in it.

I do love Ghost Recon

I really like puzzle games. Like a couple of years ago, I was addicted to Tetris. I always played it, I was watching a film and played, ate and played, went on a walk with my dog and played. Then I stopped and everything was fine, but like a month ago I discovered Sudoku and I feel that the story gonna repeat.

It has to be Kerbal Space Program - never before has a game brought me such frustration and such an immense sense of accomplishment after figuring things out. It reignited my interest in space flight as a whole and in that sense really changed my life for the better. Being kind of a simulation, it's certainly not for everyone but my little daughter is enamoured with the cute little kerbals :)

Other than that and on the casual side: world of goo is also a masterpiece and you can get it for little money and it's not hugely time consuming.

For RPGs it's the Witcher, Mass Effect - the usual suspects which have been mentioned before. I also played civilization a lot and the xcom series. But that's entertainment - Kerbal Space Program is life ;)

Lots of great games mentioned here. I've been playing video games since the 1970's when Pong first came out. That was a home console game and that's all it did. A line for the net, a small square ball, and a short line for each "paddle". The first arcade game I played was also in the 1970's. It was called Space Invaders. I dumped a lot of quarters into that one.

Favorite all time game for me was Quake 2. I liked FFA (Free For All) mode where there were no teams. I used to play for 10 hours straight at times.

But I loved a lot of video games, complex board games as well as Dungeons And Dragons. I liked poker too. I got very good at all of them. One of my favorite ways to outsmart others with strategy while enjoying a little socializing at the same time.

I've played and enjoyed a lot of the games mentioned in this thread and TONS of others.

I've played on home consoles, arcade games, and computer games. I've also played hand-held games.

Way too many to research and list.

MORROWIND (ELDER SCROLLS III) - 2002 - RPG Bethesda, Rockville (MD). Lead : Todd Howard

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we come to the greatest game of all times : The Elder Scrolls III, Morrowind. There are two schools in the RPG world, Bethesda and Bioware. We'll discuss Bioware later. Bethesda's focus is size and freedom : you create your character and go anywhere, do anything. Of course there is a main storyline (the Main Quest), but there are so many other things to do, other factions to join, other locales to explore, that the game is bounderless and open-ended. In such an ambitious setting, it is execution that makes the difference, and the devil (or rather in that case the angel) is in the details.

Technically, Morrowind was a landmark because it was the first game to make use of awesome 3-D graphics permitted by the revolution in video cards ushered by Nvidia and ATI. End of God-like isometric views : you now see the world through the eyes of your character, but you can step out whenever you like. The downside of being a tech leader is that you require big upgrades in hardware, and using the typical kid's rig of the day resulted in stuttering framerates, ugly pictures and bugs. This cost Morrowind a lot of bad press with low budget players, all the more because the game's content is too sophisticated, and requires too much independent thinking, for most of them. However the game's graphics are still simple compared to the slick photo-realism of today.

One of the great achievements of Bethesda is that they used these limitations to their advantage by creating some of the weirdest, boldest and grandest and original looks ever made for faces, monsters and buildings. Morrowind is a very complex game and the learning curve is long, but not steep. This is because there is no pressure : you evolve and learn at your own pace. The richness of the game's fabric, the great number of alternative ways and means is also what makes replay so enjoyable. The gameplay benefits from a coherent lore, the civilisation of the Tamriel empire.

Contrary to other games limiting their background to Lord of the Ring or King Arthur genres, this is much more original. You can see influences from Mesopotamian archeology and ancient religions to Machiavelli and Darwin. The lore is detailed in numerous short books : reading them is part of the immersion process. Politics, Sex, Religion, Business are as important as Combat, and treated in a highly sophisticated style, sometimes cynical, sometimes emotional. Life is rich and rewarding in Morrowind.

The icing on the cake is Jeremy Soule's superb soundtrack.
