I will be inspecting a Yamaha upright tomorrow that I believe might have been manufactured in Indonesia. I believe this is something the owner would want to deny or conceal from me.

Is there any way to tell from the serial number or other defining characteristic where a particular upright was made?

A model and serial would be most helpful. We're still working on our telepathy here in the forum. What would cause you to be suspicious of the seller? If you are not a trained and experienced technician a great deal more could be concealed that neither your nor the owner might spot. Having a qualified technician do an inspection before purchase is always the recommendation around here.

Thanks, Troy! But when I opened it up, there was a big honkin' "MADE IN JAPAN" chiseled across the soundboard.

SM, I really hope "Made in Japan" is not chiseled into the soundboard???? I would still check the serial number.

Enjoy

Enjoy

Considering how the post started Dave, this may be the best outcome we can hope for.
