Ok, so the chord in question consists of, bottom to top, C, Eb, Gb, Ab.

If the A were not flatted, it would be Cdim7. But with the Ab, could we call it Cdim-b7? Cdim6? Something else?

Ab7/C works, but this is the first chord of a song in C minor, so I thought it should be C-something.....

My first thought was Ab7/C but you've thought of that. wink What does it go to after that? I don't know if that would give any new perspectives.

If the next chord is C minor, then bass C serves as a pedal tone for both of them.

The next chord is Bdim7/D. The pedal tone moves up from C to D.

Is one of the notes part of the melody? It's not always counted in the chord name

Yes, it's a fairly normal way to voice a 1st inversion Bb7b9 chord but if you were moving from Ab down the circle of fifths it could just as easily be a Db7b9 - the next chord might lend a clue
