How would you play the notes on the bottom staff in the following passage?

In the only commercial recording (that I know of), it sounds like they are playing them at normal pitch. I would tend to agree with this, but it seems like it's a pretty debatable topic.
I embedded the recording below, skip to ~4:59 for the part in question. The work itself is for four hands, so there's a whole other set of notes being played harmonizing with them.

The left hand plays the notes at the written pitch.
The right hand plays its notes an octave above written pitch.

It is not debatable.

Yeah, I also tried the section playing both parts at pitch and the crunch of the two hands on the last beat of the bar going to the next beat requires reversing the hand overlay. At speed, this is practically impossible.

There's also the issue of the alternative of playing both part at pitch is quite unpianistic and very unlikely to be the intention of a composer who's very familiar with what's idiomatic.
