I have a 10 year old Yamaha C7 in an institution that I tune and maintain.

The Lock in the lid rail has jammed open.

From previous experience it is impossible to remove the lock without damaging the polyester case work.

I have spoken to several technicians who all have (so called) solutions, but no one will take it on.

Any advice?

Not the end of the world if you have to pull the lock out. I had a piano polyestered last year, and during the process someone managed to fill the brand new lock I'd installed with polyester, rendering it useless (I discovered this 2 days before the piano was due to ship...).

I scratched around the perimeter of the lock down to the wood, and popped the damaged lock out; a few chunks of poly came with it, but nothing too terrible. New lock installed, and poly repair kit applied around the lock. After it had cured, sand and buff as usual. A pain in the backside for sure, but not the end of the world!

Might be worth taking the lock bar off the tops to see if there are any obvious problems that could be fixed from underneath. You might also find that using a spot of WD-40 might free things up (unless something's badly bent of course).

Let us know how you get on! smile
