Does a corner bass trap have to go from floor to cieling? Would something soft, such as an uphoulstered chair in a corner make some contribution?

A chair will work to some degree. Floor to ceiling is ideal though.

I have one 24"x48" from ATS Acoustics https://www.atsacoustics.com/bass-traps.html that does the job for my studio.
The piano is about 6" out from the wall on its long side, 4" out from the tail. The bass trap is at the corner where the tail of the piano is nearly at the corner of the room. It cleaned up what was, for my purposes, overly reverberant and somewhat boomy bass.

Would a chair work?

I don't know. What I do know is that the acoustical engineer who advised me told me that 4" thick fiberglass was needed for the bass frequencies vs. 2" thick for the other frequencies elsewhere on the walls of my studio.

No, but the larger it is the more effective it will be.

Yes - and it might actually be even more effective if it isn't right in the corner. Essentially you want the sound absorbent stuff away from the walls/corner by 1/4 wavelength of the frequency you are trying to damp.
