Hi all,
I am looking for a piano for my 10 year old son who is currently at the intermediate level. I saw a Yamaha G1 with serial number J3360953 (asking price of $7000) and a Kawai KG2 with serial number 453955 (asking price $6000) from local sellers. The seller said the Kawai KG2 was made in 1970. The Yamaha G1’s seller wasn’t sure when it was made. I also saw a 1920s Steinway 5’10” with a $12000 asking price with restored strings and hammers. I would like to hear the experts’ opinions on these three pianos and to understand which one would be the best option for my son. Thank you.

The Yamaha serial number would be from 1981, the Kawai from 1970, as you said, and I think it would have been designated model 500 then. The Kawai is longer, which is a plus. But all of these pianos are old enough that condition would be an issue, so it would be best to have a technician look at them and give an evaluation, especially for the Steinway.

What is your son playing now? Is it acoustic? If so, do you have a technician? If you do, you should work with that person.

Thank you very much for the information. We decided to pass on those three pianos. We had a technician check on the Yamaha G1. Based on him, the price is too high. He recommend KG2. We now have our eyes on a Young Chang PG185 made in 2000 from a local store. The price is $7999. The external condition looks great. My son likes the feel of playing it. I looked up PG185 online, it seems that most are sold around $5000-$6000. My son is playing a Yamaha digital piano. It will be his first grand piano. Any recommendations on Young Chang PG 185?

I am not familiar with it. You will get better answers if you ask in the main Piano Forum, not the FAQs.
