I hope this isn't a stupid question, but it may be.

As far as I know the balance rail pins are normally adjusted using a piece of wood and a hammer, whereas the front rail bat pins are adjusted using a key spacer tool.

Is anything bad going to happen if I use a piece of wood and hammer to adjust the front rail pins?

The only problem I see is you will not readily see the result of front pin movements because it seems that using a piece of wood requires lifting the key???
What I use on balance rail is a brass rod about 3or4 inch long dimpled on the end to more easily engage the pin at the top. With small hammer.
For front rail I use the typical spacing tool but I customize it to make it a bit easier to use. I put it on the grinder and taper one side so I end up with a wedge that easily goes under the front rail punchings.

Thanks, I realise it will take longer that way. I just wanted to be sure I won't cause any damage. I've got a 2 week wait for a spacer tool and I want to get on with it.

The risk as I see it is that you will hit it, overcorrect, then hit it back, etc etc and end up loosening the pins as a result. Can you not wait? You can still level the keys and do everything else without spacing. AFAICS

Why? Is the key not spaced right?

Keys warp a lot more than front rails.

Is the top of the key level?
