My understanding is that both were 5'8" grands. Seems odd a company would make two models the same size. Or is one larger than the other? Thanks for any help.

The E has 20 overstrung notes. The R has 26.

It's an older model that preceded the R. They were not made simultaneously.

There were models with 20 bass strings made at the same time as models with 26, ST scale. They were not always designated E or R.

Aesthetically, the R has Baldwin’s modern post-war case style. The E would have the older style case.

Yes, the ones I have worked on were quite attractive without being ornate.

Here are the Baldwin models ordered by length in the 1967 service manual. Notice that the E and G don’t include length. I know that the G was produced with varying lengths over time, and think that was also the case with the E.

I think the M & R are “new” post war models, that only ever existed with the new case style, while the L and longer models seem to have existing scales that continued with the new style case work after the wars. So, I’d speculate that the E stopped production before WWII. Sadly, a lot of Baldwin’s history has been lost to time...

I am pretty sure that I have seen pre-war Ms, and I have definitely seen pre-war scale ST Baldwins, not always designated R, B and H I recall as being a couple of those designations. Baldwin history is fuzzy, more so because I think like Chickering they had a fire which destroyed records.
