Why would they write Chickering on that green masking tape? Fear of forgetting what brand they were working on? Probably to keep track of which piano the dampers came from.

Congratulations! The older Chickerings make great restoration pianos.

Dogperson: not sure just yet. The rebuilder is waiting to hear exactly when from the mover, but said it'll be picked up within the next two weeks. Then the long ride home!
David-G, ShiroKuro, thanks! I learned something today!!
FrankCox, I think it's so they knew which piano the dampers belonged to while they were on the bench being refinished and re-felted.
N-Artur, it's a Chickering Quarter Grand, built sometime between 1910 and 1925. I don't have a complete serial number to check its age, but written on the keybed are the names of two Paramount movies from 1928 and 1929, along with a couple cast signature. I believe the piano may have been owned by Paramount and used to record background music for the films.

What i do not understand is removing the strings without removing the dampers, although this may have threaded damper wires. However, I would just replace the dampers entirely, because the heads do not have grooves to hold them at the proper angle front to back, and drill out the underlevers and put in cross-screws. Of course, that is easy for me to say, because I still have a few sets of damper heads left over from Aeolian-American. They are not authentic to the time, but they are Chickering damper heads.

BDB, I do know that it does have threaded damper wires. My tech accidentally broke one a few years back and had all kinds of fun replacing it.

David-G I m out of the loop. Remind us what piano you are having restored. It's a (very) antique Broadwood grand. When I get some time to get organised I will post some pictures.

I cannot, for the life of me, sort out the photo embedding process. It’s ridiculously complicated. Wow, your piano looks AMAZING!!!! I’m so happy for you, I’m sure the long wait will have been worth it!! 😍😍😍

JeanieA,
Warmest congratulations—old Chickerings are wonderful! I sorely miss the one I had to give up some years ago.
