Today I’ve ordered the Yamaha YDP-164 (will finally start to play piano again after 10 years yay). I live on a apartment on the 3rd floor and I don’t want to annoy my neighbors with my playing. I was wondering if the piano causes any vibrations that can be heard through the floor. I live in a rather new complex so I assume the isolation is pretty good, but should I place a mat or a carpet or something like that underneath my piano? Also the floor material in my apartment is a bit rimpled, although the rimples are very small. Could this cause any problems or should I place something underneath the piano for that?

If you are playing with headphones, then the sound of the action could potentially travel through the floor, depending on how thin the material is between your apartments. I think probably the best thing would be to try to practice during the agreed upon hours where you can make noise in your building, and talk with the neighbors below you to let them know to contact you if there are any issues.

If they say nothing, then you don't have to worry. But if it is an issue, then you can certainly try a rug under the piano. There are some other more expensive options if this doesn't fix it.

Thanks so much for your advice! I’m considering putting a rug underneath up front to prevent any potential issues. Would you have any idea for a good material that damps the vibrations and won’t cause the piano to shift?

Sound (pun unintended) advice from @Morodiene. Here are two threads that can help you, some have other links within them:

A man must love a thing very much if he practices it without any hope of fame or money, but even practice it without any hope of doing it well. Such a man must love the toils of the work more than any other man can love the rewards of it.
