A fun (or traumatic) thread about pet damage, either to your own piano or others that you've seen!

I've been lucky that when my cat tried to jump into my piano, it was my first grand and I scared her by banging on the keys. The cats have never tried to jump into my Bosie (whew!). But one of them vomited on the cover once. Thankfully it's washable.

My younger kitten chews on everything and many of my music books now have chewed up corners! She also chewed on the corner of my digital piano bench and I had to color in the wood with black Sharpie. Thankfully she hasn't done anything to my grand.

The older kitten likes to sit on the piano when it's closed but she tried to jump on the lid when it was open and slid down! There are now faint scratches. You can really only see them if you're looking for them but I know there. (Ok, I am really traumatized now. I just tried to rub out the scratches and I made them worse! Just bought Cory Buff Brite and polish online and hopefully I can fix it.)

Our dog lifted his leg on my Grand Piano Leg (on several occasions) - luckily the case wasn't refinished but I still grimaced!

He almost peed or he did pee?! 😳

We are picking up a puppy pretty soon. I have purchased a fence to enclose the grand, and a couple of bottles of bitter apple spray are on standby.

So far no problems with my 2 cats. Rico, our 2 yr old tuxedo sure was jealous when my beautiful shiny black piano arrived. He ignored me the following day. Now I have him sit next to me in another chair while I practice. I can see he wants to jump on the piano. I pray he doesn't. Our other cat had had a back injury and can't jump. Fortunately in this situation.

Your cats may just enjoy your playing like this.

Here is a pic of the lower rear leg of my Baldwin R, model 226 Queen Ann/Art Case, the former owner's dog chewed on. You can see the the dog's paws in the pic. Looked like a large, white, Great Pyrenees. This is a pic they sent me when I was enquiring about the piano listed for sale on CL.



Here is the scroll work on the leg after I used some wood epoxy to mold a new scroll. I thought the epoxy wood repair turned out well, but I never stained it. I started enjoying the piano so much the unfinished leg repair didn't bother me.



Here is a pic where the dog chewed on the corner of the bench. A little cherry stain might help a lot, but again, I got a good buy on the piano, so the dog may have actually done me a favor.



Here is a pic of the piano as it sits now. There were a few other blemishes, but nothing major. And, it sounds and plays great!

When Shadow was a puppy she chewed a little bit on the leg of my C Bechstein B. I didn't mind. I just touched it up. Her puppy, Sooty, is 8 weeks old tomorrow. He hasn't chewed anything, yet. I have some anti chew spray ready.

Shadow once provided me with a pile of faeces under the music room piano. Bad dog, but what a great music critic.

Don't worry. If Cory doesn't do the trick, the polyester finish can be buffed out to look like it never happened, but I would leave that to a technician with poly experience.

Our two goats followed the dogs into the house through the dog door. As part of their adventure they jumped on top of my piano but I keep it covered so there was no damage. The grand finale was eating all the toilet paper in the bathroom. They left a trail of goat poops through the house so it was easy to figure out where they went.

A funny story, for sure!

I've had goats for over 30 years. I have 6 now. They stay in my 10 acre pasture, usually. But I'd bring the new babies in the house and let my late wife see them, and she'd always name them. On occasion, I'd bring one in the house if it was sick and needed care, or an orphan that needed bottle feeding.

Goats can be a lot of fun, and a good pet, but I'm not sure they can be house trained. And, it seems you see them in a lot of TV commercials nowadays.

Thanks, Rich! I'm super upset at myself. Luckily you can only see it in a specific light. I found someone very reputable and will get a quote. If it's expensive I'll just leave it... it's really not even very visible unless you're looking for it. I think the finish is so tough that it didn't even occur to me that it could be scratched unless I worked hard at it.

Turns out the text online (especially on the Jansen Piano Benches site which sells a piano repair kit) seems to recommend Cory Buff Brite for buffing out scratches and then High Gloss Polish to finish. The Cory site has been updated to say not to use the Buff Brite product on polyester! It's very misleading on all the sites that haven't updated their text.

But I'll try the High Gloss Polish and hopefully it will do the trick!

OMG I love goats, I didn't know you kept them!! 😍 I've always wanted to do a goat Yoga class, LOL!!! Let's get one together at Rich G's place when we visit, I'm sure he'd love to watch them jumping on all the pianos, LMAO!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
