I think this work is a masterpiece - not a note out of place....

Hi, Mikhail -- Yes, for me this is Liszt at his most "well-behaved" from a compositional perspective. I confess to not being much of a Liszt guy -- so much of his considerable output seems to me concerned with technical bravado for its own sake. In things like the Hungarian Rhapsodies, that approach is often charming in addition to spectacular, but (as an example) I could never take "After a Lecture of Dante" very seriously, and just dislike the "mellerdrammer". Someone else posted his Valse-Impromptu recently -- that's another one I regard as a thorough success, and this one is as well. Thanks for sharing it!

Incidentally, I believe you had posted Wilde Jagd a few months ago -- that was another one I had thrown into the dustbin of silly over-the-top pieces, but you demonstrated to me that there is real music to be had, given an appropriate arsenal of technical proficiency in its service. And so, I'm not THAT anti-Liszt -- just a lot of other composers I'd rather listen to.

Well, I happen to adore Liszt.... I’m doing the Weimar Liszt Competition in October....

I find that certain Liszt works are often played trashily....
I consider much of his writing to be positively Beethovenian - and it really should be performed rather “seriously”....

Currently I’m preparing:
Liszt: Totentanz, Concerto 1, Sonata, Totentanz, Mephisto 2 and a few transcriptions, Debussy preludes and the Beethoven Op 111 for the Weimar competition...
Not easy.... pretty big workload

I enjoyed this performance very much of a work I had never heard nor ever heard of. The Steinway, though, has a very "un-Steinway" sound. Is that the piano itself or the recording?

Regards,

I found it to be pretty poor sounding, tinny bass....

It is the Steinway B at the Juilliard Recording studio....
On top of everything else - it was not tuned prior to the recording
