Or if you have a life, you could simply purchase a $999 M1 MacBook Air smile

I've seen that publication before. It's good stuff. Or was.

I say "was", using the past tense, because much of the optimization discussed there is from the Windows 7 era.

In the time since then, computers got much faster and Windows got a much better.

These days the only optimization needed is to turn on the power switch.
Even Windows audio is often satisfactory without resorting to ASIO. Nice.

Quite right about Windows 10 audio drivers... They are pretty good these days. I'm not sure about certain (Realtek) chipsets that don't play nice with low latency...

Realtek is surely the low-price leader, so I'm inclined to expect little.

But on this Windows desktop I (accidentally) tried Windows audio and found it gave latency almost as low as what I'm getting with a Presonus audio interface through the Presonus ASIO driver.
That was quite a surprise. And that's what prompted my earlier post.

Now, this is a particularly fast PC. Nearly top-end when it was new four years ago. I wonder what people are experiencing today using Windows audio on run-of-the-mill PCs.

Hello,

I went over the Cantabile document.

It is well-written, quite useful and I like it a lot.

So again, @Charles Cohen, thanks for posting this!

Cheers and happy optimizations,

HZ

Unfortunately my laptop was from 2019 and the audio part still has extensive latency. For me, having an external box for audio was at least helpful and reliable, so, can't complain, I guess. smile

Yes, probably the best approach.
But if you need a lot of RAM and a large ssd for some big libraries, Apple pc are very expensive.

I gave up on windows for software pianos. 2015 MacBook Air is glitch free. 2020 pimped out windows machine is great for gaming and hopeless for sound modules.

And what exactly is a ‘pimped out’ windows machine?

Is AS104U no good? Seems fine for me; never any issues.

I kind of checked out of the PC after fighting with the MIDI drivers on my 16-bit SoundBlaster card and got a Mac. Never looked back. But maybe I should? Gotta say Windows 10 looks nice.

Well, my main complaint is that after windows updates, some of the settings are lost. So, then again you get messages to turn on your firewall and stuff like that so you have to go over all the settings again to rediscover where on earth that was turned off.

Yes, very annoying. I fixed that by disabling Windows updates. There's really nothing worth updating anymore anyway.

Yes, but there are scripts that do the same thing(s), and so can be tailored. Although still a pia just rerun the script.
