So I'm considering making an electronic arduino/solenoid based music box type of device. I converted a player piano to electronic, and that was fun, but I didn't have room to keep the piano. Now I'm thinking about making a smaller device.
Question is, what type of strings, tubes, bars, or whatever sound the best when being struck? I would like to make something that has a better less clinky sound than a kalimba or xylophone. Maybe metal tubes like a windchime would sound better? Any thoughts?

Apologies in advance for cross posting. to the
mechanical device forum. I thought I could come back and delete this but I don't see how to.

Why not draw inspiration from this one?

He calls it a vibraphone. And instead of marbles, you could used solenoid driven hammers.
