Hi all, I recently bought a new upright piano, and in the past few weeks playing, every once in a while I can’t make a key sound, and I think it’s because the hammer hasn’t returned to the original location properly. I’m thinking about getting a technician to look at it, but I’m worried that because this problem happens rarely (but often enough to make it annoying), what if when the technician is here and everything works fine? How would he be able to help then if he can’t even see the problem?

This is my first time owning a piano so this is very new to me, any insights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If this is a new piano, it should be covered under warranty.

If it happens on the same note all the time, write down what note it is. Although we techs can usually find notes that are sluggish even if it is intermittent, it helps to get a clue.

Sometimes there isn't enough lost motion, sometimes the back check distance is to blame, sometimes bushings are seized, sometimes the hammer jack spring is sprung, etc...
