I personally like the 1st edition (which Busoni claimed, that Liszt wrote this in 1849) better than the more popular 2nd edition.

Two reasons:

1. The opening of the first edition evokes dread and death much better than the second edition.
2. The De Profundis theme in the middle section evokes forgiveness.

I believe certain composers and their pieces in the less-played repertoire ought to be re-examined.
