Hi everyone! I'll be staying in downtown Baltimore for a week shortly, and was wondering if anyone knew of a place that I might be able to practice? I have a digital keyboard that I could bring, but it might be nice if there was a piano store or practice space or something nearby that I could drop in on. Just a thought. Thanks!

I think Steve Cohen’s shop is in the Baltimore metro area, but not downtown (will you have a car?). He may know of some options for you.

In days long past, I was always able to gain entry to a college music school practice facility in any city. There usually was always one of the tiny practice rooms available, and nobody checking if I were a student or not. You might also check local churches, with a church hall that is unused during the week. With permission, I’ve also used this to great advantage during my work lunch hours.

You might ask someone at the Peabody Institute, which is just a mile or so north of downtown. They've got scads of practice rooms with decent pianos. The trick is finding someone to grant entry to you. Try calling the main office and see where that gets you.

You may find that academic institutions are reluctant to officially let you in (insurance, privacy and other modern day issues, like stalkers, predators , etc). When I was an undergrad (early 90s), I had no trouble using the practice rooms (I was not a music major). And when I moved to new cities I'd usually try to take some classes for fun, and frequently did the same. But when I started teaching, about a decade ago, the large state university seemed to keep all the pianos under lock and key! When I signed up for proper lessons the facilities were made available (but I have a piano at home anyway).

Why can't Baltimore be like London where there are pianos lining up the streets
