Question for our music composer friends...

How do you protect your original pieces?

I've written a few originals, one of which I just recently recorded at a great studio in NH.
Once I'm done working with the engineer on the final cut I'd like to release it for download/streaming (for a small fee).

I don't have the sheet music for it (I'm a self taught musician, I don't have enough theory knowledge to write it out).

Can I protect the piano solo itself?

How?

Great question, Frank.

I've been wondering this as well.

I hope your post prompts a good discussion.

Compositions Lacking Notation:
For those of us who do NOT have written notation of your composition, what additional limitations does that present?

Compositions with Notation:
Can someone let us know if/how having the notation of the composition available provides additional protection.

My thought is, if an original composition we post online remains rather obscure - not generally a well-known piece of music - perhaps we should just assume it's likely that sometime, somewhere, someone is going to pirate it and claim it as their own. Should we just realize that's a highly possible outcome we should accept as part of posting it online?

The following article seems relevant as it addresses both both composition and sound recording. The gist of it seems to be that if you want your music to be properly protected, it needs to be registered for copyright.

You can copyright at least 10 compositions for under $100.
Record them and send an MP3.
No need to send notation.
Although the second you upload a song to YouTube, for example, it is copywritten the only way to take it to trial is a registered with us gov copyright receipt.
Many more details can be found online but that is the gist.

Actually after you upload some part (sample of your melody, or score of it for example on musescore- https://musescore.com/user/login?destination=https%3A%2F%2Fmusescore.com%2Fupload) you are automatically secure the copyright of your music!
