Besides the lesson book?
I got a new student that is just about to finish Alfred Basic 1B, but she's only been using the lesson book with her teacher so far.
No theory book, recital book, or technic book used so far..
Not sure what to do. When she finishes 1B, move her up to 2 and start all the theory, recital, technic from 2? or just get her to start from 1A again?

Oh, student, I am so excited that you are getting to move up to a new level! There are some really fun books here -

Lesson Book- I will use during lesson time the most, and you will practice at home. Look at all these concepts to learn- fun!

Theory is like the workbook- this is when you write things and see how the patterns work. This is mostly a one and done practice at home.

The technique book is great for warm-ups and keeping good hand postures. Like in sorts, you warm-up first, and use good form.

And then, we have the recital book- after all the work and exercises and leaarning in the other books, this is the, HEY, I know this now! book.

It might be cool to get a bag just for your new piano books. Let's write your name on the cover of each one. What color?

(If you find a theory concept she missed from 1A, pull out your copy and work through it with them. Say, this is a brain review. Just want to check that you have this in your memory banks.)

Good luck!

It depends a bit on her abilities.
* Did her previous teacher teach her any theory during the lesson? If not, start with theory book 1A.
* How is she technically? In need of book 1A or 1B? Or good enough to start with technic book 2?
* Do you feel the pieces in book 1B are just a bit too difficult for her? Start with recital book 1A or 1B. Or are the pieces just right? Then start with recital book 2.

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.
