Dear Mr. James,

thank you for the swift reply. Its always great to see company employees such as yourself having a close relationship with their customers/community/forums. That is something that I think many people including myself really appreciate.

Indeed it seems the best way currently is recording directly to a USB. Correct me if I am wrong but the PianoRemote app uses the phones internal microphones which really decreases the recording quality since it captures background noise as well. So for me that isn't really an option. You mentioned something about a possible future update. That would be really amazing since I had already lost hope. Could you maybe share with us if we can expect any future updates? Even if the aforementioned issues do not get addressed, it is still nice to see updates being rolled out smile

Kind regards
Ioakim

Hello Ioakim,

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, when the PianoRemote recorder is set to capture audio, the device's internal microphones will be used (an external audio interface is also possible). However, PianoRemote can also record as MIDI format, which is essentially the same format used by the CA79/CA99's internal recorder. Finally, it's perhaps worth noting that it is possible to convert a song recorded in internal memory to an MP3/WAV file saved on a USB memory device using the "Overdub" function.

In summary, if you wish to capture an audio file use the USB Audio recorder, if you wish to capture a MIDI file, use the PianoRemote app (for now).

The CA99/CA79 will continue to receive software updates, however I'm afraid company policy prevents me from disclosing details about the contents of the update, or the release schedule.

Kind regards,
James

First post updated!

Latest release
LCD Touch Panel: v1.2.0 (October 2021)
System Firmware: v2.08 (October 2021)

More information here:
https://www.kawai-global.com/news/ca99_ca79_nv10s_nv5s_software_update_october_2021/

Please note that the purpose of this update is mainly to implement 'User' Virtual Technician parameters in the built-in touchpanel and PianoRemote app (app update is waiting approval from Google/Apple but should be available shortly).

Kind regards,
James

James, does the firmware portion of this update include the high-frequency speaker EQ change that was in the firmware beta release?

I was just about to roll back my firmware because I realized that the speaker output is nowhere as nice as the headphone sound. It sounds very boxy. I've played with only headphones for many months and only recently realized the difference. I'm going to roll back the firmware to check if the beta caused it or if it was always like this.

No, I don't believe so, at least this point is not listed in the changelog.

If desired, the beta update sent to some customers can be re-applied after updating the main system firmware.

This update is not compatible with the original NV5, I’m afraid.

Do I need a get a new "beta" firmware so that I will not have the buzzing issue after the upgrade? Afraid to upgrade if it causes the buzzing to come back.

Back around the time the beta firmware came out, some owners were complaining about buzzing in the base notes, others complaining about buzzing in the treble notes. Which did you have?

Yes I read that, but was left wondering about the procedure for upgrade?

1. upgrade sys & lcd to the new version
2. downgrade sys to beta

I would assume that new version features don't work this way?
But okay, if it works like that, I can try.

Thanks James. I successfully updated the UI of my NV5S but I somehow cannot start the system firmware update process. According to manual, one has to hold the power button for 10 seconds, which is not correct I think. When I do this the NV5 just starts. I have to hold the power button for at least 20 seconds and then I get this screen:

Of course, the USB drive is inserted in the correct port and the system firmware file is in the root folder of the drive. I've tried multiple USB devices with different sizes and both FAT and FAT32 to no avail.

Also, could it be that the progress bar has been changed with the new version of the UI? I don't have the NV5S long enough to know for sure but if it has changed I have to say that I don't like it at all. The screen starts with the usual Kawai logo and a round progress indicator which is quite nice and then moves to this progress bar which is very bright white and blue on a dark background and makes some random movements... Honestly, it looks a bit toyish and doesn't fit in the rest of the UI which I quite like (and many seem to hate?).
I tried to make a picture of it:

Where can I download previous versions if I wanted to downgrade?

Well, I'm a fool. I just successfully updated the system firmware. Yay!

Apparently, one should not use the "USB for update" port to update the system firmware that's only used for updating the UI.
This is correctly stated in the manual albeit a bit confusing, especially when both are updated in succession. Hopefully, this works in my defence blush
Note: I still had to hold the power button for 20 seconds.

That update is slap in the face to all Kawai customers:

Auto safe on switch off is not working anymore.

Not one problem on the UI is solved:

Still changing values by error whilst scrolling, no possibility to edit/save or delete single customer profiles, bluetooth audio still not working, promised switch off of back light not implemented,...

Are U serious Kawai?

Try switching off bluetooth. Seems to be sort of connection animation.

Don't like it either.

Ok Kawai DPs are cheap but thus should not happen.

Hello,

I was super excited about the new firmware update specially for user temperament settings.

LCD update v1.2.0 completed successfully but firmware update v2.08 has been going for almost an hour and the message on the screen still says "Writing...". I'm getting worried. Don't want to turn off the piano or take out the USB key and have no idea how long more the update can take.

Anybody else has any issues with system update v2.08?

Thanks

Same here. I waited 2 hrs. After that I hold the off button 5s (hard power down) and the update went well. After that shock moment I did the complete update a second time for safety and it worked as described (with "done").

So don't worry you can redo the update.

Do you mean that your current configuration is not reloaded on startup? It looks like my settings are always restored to default or something...
Didn't have the time to investigate it further but it now always restarts with SK-EX with Rendering in Classic mode instead of something I had selected last time.
This was working before the update and seems like a major bug to me! How can I store my settings and prevent having to select my settings after startup each time?
I would advise anyone to not update to this version (yet).

Switching off bluetooth did not make a difference.

I’ve just installed the software update and also noticed the screen dimming as I’m using it.

I set the screen to dim after 30 seconds, but the system seems to start the timing as soon as you wake up the screen and not 30 seconds after the last input. So if you’re still altering the settings after 30 seconds the screen dims and goes off.

This didn’t happen before the update.

Bizarre!

Concluding from all the comments that it seems to be better to wait for another update instead of upgrading this alpha-stage build to my piano...
