Hi
I bought the CFX last week. I am using the stand alone version and also tried the vst in Reaper.
I am trying classic full...I am using a clavinova clp 735 as my midi keyboard and ..and Scarlett 2in 2 out USB audio interface
The sound is awful..I linked to soundcloud ...the right hand treble part ...sounds like a cheap casio from toys r us in the1980s smile
Ive tried fiddling with the velocity curve without any success...turning off the the ambient...etc
Any ideas where i am going wrong ??

I apply Philip Johnston's settings referred to and discussed here:

http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/printthread/Board/6/main/186193/type/thread.html

The results are beautiful. IMO the full Classical perspective is the best. I mainly use headphones.

How was this recorded? In reaper? In the piano? Line out from the audio interface? It's almost as if you are mixing two sound sources...

It was recorded in Reaper using Scarlett 2i2 third generation as audio interface

Yes, you should double-check that the audio output from CFX (and only it) goes to Scarlett and then to the input of your audio recording software. To check this, it makes sense to try another (software) AI and listen to its output immediately through headphones. Scarlett is a good AI device, but its interface is a little tricky. The audio from Clavinova should be disabled.

If you are using reaper, don't record audio from the audio interface (well, you can do it, but for the purpose of testing it's better to keep it as simple as possible). Disconnect the scarlett for the moment, and set local control OFF in the piano (so, no audio gets out, just midi).
Set an instrument track in Reaper set to Garritan, and record directly (or record midi and render afterwards). If all is well, you can use thw audio interface of the 735 to output garritan through the speakers.

The clavinova is only transmitting midi.data ..no audio ...as the only connection from the clavinova is via usb which only transmits midi data.

That is not correct. In the new yamaha's (and also in most models if not all of the previous generation), the usb transmits both midi AND audio, both ways. The piano contains an audio interface and you can forget the scarlett (unless you prefer to deal with analog ins and outs, but you need to know what you are doing or risk degrading the sound in each AD-DA conversion).

Connect the usb directly to the computer and in standalone garritan choose the yamaha input. And do not forget to select local control off in the yahama menu.

To me it sounds like you are recording the clp 735 , not the Garritan

Likewise, I agree -- this doesn't sound like the Garritan

It is Garritan becuase I can try out the other presets that come with Garritan besides the classic...along with contemporary and player...additionally i can change all the other parameters in Garritan...such as reverb ...equalisation...closed lid...mics...i can manipulate all of these so it is definitely Garritan...otherwise I wouldnt be able to change these parameters

i thought a separate audio interface was better then using the audio interface in the laptop,,,,that is why i bought the scarlett...I was connecting from host usb of the clavinova to usb in of the computer...I was connecting from usb c of the scarlett to usb in of the computer. I disabled local control on the clavinova. I was will bypass the scarlett as you recomended...thanks smile

I'm not sure what's going on - is it possible you're hearing audio from both the Clavinova and Garritan somehow?

Either way, I wanted to encourage you to persevere because Garritan CFX should--and does!--sound wonderful and is a joy to play!

Hope you get it sorted!

That sounds a lot nicer, like the Garritan.

As others have suggested, try simplifying things to narrow down your issue.

What I'd suggest is to try the Garritan standalone.
In Tools/Preferences be sure the Focusrite is selected as the audio device. (And ASIO if you're using Windows).

Plug headphones directly into the Scarlett.
Play a few notes by mouse-clicking keys on the keyboard in the Garritan GUI.
Then play the same notes on your CLP.

Make sure you know what you're hearing there.

Then use the buttons on the lower left of the GUI to load a MIDI file. Play it. Check the sound with the headphones still plugged directly into the Scarlett as you try different settings in the Garritan.

Then work farther out.
