Hello guys, I came across this Schimmel grand piano with series number above 379k (which means it's made 2014 or more recent) BUT THE PRICE IS LESS THAN $10,000. The seller doesn't know the exact model of the grand and there's no writings of the grand model inside. The mechanics (hammer head, hammer shank, whippen etc) are replaced with yamaha parts. Touch and tone is very good, the insides seem really new. What are your opinions? Do you think I can purchase the original Shimmel mechanics later on if I decided to upgrade it? Thanks!

I can see the pictures, and the piano looks really nice. Seems super awesome but I know very little about the various schimmel models. Anyway, just click on the link that the OP posted to see the pictures.

Why would someone put Yamaha action parts on a Schimmel? Is the seller the original owner? Why is it so inexpensive? You better have it checked by a good tech.

The model number is cast or stamped into the plate, under the music desk at the bass/tenor break. The serial number probably dates to 2017-2018. Looking at the bridge it’s probably a classic “C” series because it doesn’t have the groove routed out like the Konzert “K” series pianos have, or maybe the midline International series (or whatever they called the globally sourced model at that time).
The US distributor may be able to assist with identifying the model if you provide the serial number. Their contact information is listed in the Piano Buyer brand profiles.
What the seller mentions about the action makes zero sense. That raises a red flag for me (scam?) and I agree with the others that a qualified technical inspection prior to purchase by a technician who does a lot of grand action regulation work is warranted before proceeding.

I agree with the what terminaldegree and Pianoloverus said, but I’m far less knowledgeable. I would be troubled by such a recent model of a Schimmel grand with a Yamaha action. Even with a piano technician’s inspection and ok, I’d keep shopping. Best Wishes on your shopping and finding your piano.

Things don't add up be very careful. I would just turn away and don't look back.

Thanks for your feedback everyone Yes I tried looking at the part which normally has the model number, but in this piano, there's nothing. The seller is not the original owner, they just got this piano last week and offered it to me right away. I brought my technician with me when I came to see the piano, but he's also as confused as I am. My technician only said that the touch and the sound of the piano is good, the mechanics still work well, and the piano is obviously still very new, but he also doesn't know why on earth would someone replace the mechanics of a brand new Schimmel with Yamaha mechanics. The only reason I am still kinda reluctant to let go of this piano is because it does sound really good for a piano at this price. The treble sounds clear and kinda like a bell, and the bass sounds quite deep. The touch is also perfect. I am now contacting the Germany and US distributor as you suggested. Wish me luck!

There must be some way to trace past ownership. Question for Schimmel owners: Is it unusual for Schimmel's to not show the model number on the plate?

Question for Schimmel owners: Is it unusual for Schimmel's to not show the model number on the plate? Not an owner myself but I was closely involved in trading in a Schimmel grand that looks similar, and that one had no model specification on the plate, or anywhere else, either, just the number. The font of the number and everything else looks indeed very very similar. I agree that a qualified technician should look at this though. The OP can measure how long it is and that should give an indication what the normal price is for such a piano, but the model that we traded in was a SP 182T from 1998, and the dealer was selling this piano for just over 20k euro (at the beginning of the pandemic). I believe they did work on it before selling it and the piano itself was in good condition and had a Renner action.

Thanks, after looking at web search for the SP 182T model, looks like this piano is also that exact same model. It seems like it is a discontinued model, and now replaced by C and K series. So does it raise a flag to why this older model have serial number dating to around 2017 manufacturing period?

I don't know. They look very similar but perhaps are still different. I don't know how much Schimmel changed the appearance since then. I would carefully look at recent C model Schimmels, and see what they look like. Judging from their folder ( https://www.schimmel-pianos.de/fileadmin/Download-pdfs/2021/21-02_Classic_EN.pdf ) to me their new models also look like this. It is strange. If one would change serial numbers etc to make a piano look newer (from 2017) than it is (from around 2000), why then ask a price that is even substantially lower than a piano from 2000?

So does it raise a flag to why this older model have serial number dating to around 2017 manufacturing period? If it really is an SP 182T, that would depend on when the SP series was discontinued. I can't find anything on this. Hopefully, Schimmel is responsive to your inquiry, and soon. For what it's worth, if anything, 2017 is around the time Pearl River got heavily involved with the company. As for the action, who knows what happened to the original. It could have been irreparably harmed somehow (a really bad spill? some sort of domestic disturbance? who knows) and, for whatever reason, the original owner decided to replace it with a Yamaha's. Perhaps due to an unavailability at the time of anything else that would fit? If this beautiful piano really is in good shape, though, as your tech if I understood you correctly indicated when you first looked at it, that's one heck of a deal for a recent, German-made grand. If another tech says the same thing, and the serial number checks out with the model and manufacturing year, I don't see how one could pass it up. It certainly looks genuine based on other images of Schimmel grands I've seen online. There's a Piano Works Atlanta YouTube video showcasing an older SP 182T, and the tone on that grand is wonderful. Maybe the seller/dealer discounted the price due to the action brand change, or got it real cheap because the original owner was wealthy, got something better, and wanted to unload the Schimmel in a hurry. I got a really good deal on an older, but not pre-owned Seiler grand, from a respected dealer who's had his own showroom for over 20 years. Not nearly as good as this deal appears to be, but these things do happen.

sorry can't see the picture, I assume it's a 6' grand? it has great tone/sound, perfect touch, mechanics work well, looks relatively new, your tech ok with it, price < 10k, you only need to make sure it's a "real Schimmel", then sounds a bargain to me😁

I will go the dealer again tomorrow or the day after to try it out one more time to seal the decision. It really is a bargain for such a freshly looking Schimmel, that is why I keep coming back to this piano after all the red flags that has been brought so far. Also, it plays very nice with a pleasantly bright tone. sorry can't see the picture, I assume it's a 6' grand? it has great tone/sound, perfect touch, mechanics work well, looks relatively new, your tech ok with it, price < 10k, you only need to make sure it's a "real Schimmel", then sounds a bargain to me😁

🤣😂we must not speak Bahasa Indonesia may offend others😁
the last time I saw a Schimmel was last April in Petrof Cideng, not sure the type but at least 6', great dark typical Schimmel sound, wondering if it's that same unit; it's a reputable dealer since 1960's & seems to regularly import used Schimmel (& my CRW) to Indonesia,
if it's from that dealer, or Sigma, or another Petrof House the Wijaya brothers, then must be a "real Schimmel"👍😊

If the piano is in Indonesia it could very well be the "International Series".They were cheaper models, I do not know if they are still made today. They sourced materials from different countries, then made them in Germany.I did not know that they used Yamaha actions though. On the other hand the OP says that the "the action was replaced with a Yamaha action", which causes one think that the original Renner action was replaced? I cannot remember if the iron plate of the Classic series are marked with the model name. The serial number is embossed on the plate. However the cabinets are marked with the model name in the upright pianos.(or is it just in the Konzert series I have seen?) This seems similar to quite a few other brands I have seen.
