If you could have your piano in ANY color/finish, what would it be?

Me: lacquer white, but pearly white would be cool

Light oak; it would go splendidly with the furniture around here.

There are some lovely samples of macassar pianos, especially in the Steinway crown jewel collection. Another alternative, if we can work it out, would be an Arts & Crafts style upright piano made from quarter-sawn oak.

I think the interesting thing on this thread will be to see how many do not choose satin ebony or gloss ebony, assuming those are two of the choices for "color". If many don't choose those two it would imply that it's the considerable extra cost of those wood finishes that prevents many from choosing them.

There are quite a few wood finishes I would have chosen if it wasn't a question of the extra cost or my having to pay for a special order without trying the piano ahead of time or the dealer having so few to choose from. Some of the wood finishes I find too extremely patterned for my taste. OTOH I'm quite happy with my M&H satin ebony finish which I think is more like half way between satin and gloss.

Favourite wood finish would be teak but it would clash with our existing dining room furniture. If this thread has been created as a matter of fun might I slip a spanner into the works and say that black is not a colour ( a long standing debate I have with my other half).

Some would say, neither is white 😅

Hmm, this is a tricky question, because my interior/piano room is designed around the assumption that the piano is black.

I think I might stick with black even with other options, for these reasons:

1. The keyboard is black and white (with that thin strip of red of course) so a black piano "goes with" the keyboard better.

2. I like a neutral, but very light, wall color. In that kind of room, black "pops" more so than wood/brown or other colors.

3. I like having colorful art on the walls, so again, black works well with that.

Hmm, as I think about it, I am quite happy with my current piano room, so if money were no issue and I were redesigning a room with a much larger piano, for example, I think I would still stick with the above details, so I would still want a black grand....

Having said that, this is for my own piano/my own home. I always love seeing art cases and all kinds of "crazy" pianos even if I would never want to own one.

But would not want this piano in my living room.

I also love Elton John's red piano, and other "sports car" red pianos I've seen, but yeah, definitely wouldn't want to own one.

Still, super fun to think about!

I've seen a couple of wood grain finishes that I really like. One of them has some red in it; I suppose it would be called cherry, or in some cases, Extreme Cherry. The other one that I really like is pictured below. I'm not sure what you'd call it. As they say, though, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.



I think that a glossy black would be my third choice.

Satin Ebony would be my choice if I had one. However, If I were buying a Fazioli, I would pick their beautiful blue. You can see it if you go to their website. Stunning!

Isn't that "thousand word picture" some kind of a veneer? It has the same colour and grain as a 1950's era coffee table that my mother had.

Thanks a shining black polished ebony is great for grands and uprights.They are tough, available, and I have personally seen that scratches are easily removed.Many wood finish pianos do not age well unless they are well restored or rebuilt.

As long as it plays well black, brown,cherry, are all the same to me as long as they play well.Red or white I am not keen on.It is just a wood finish after all, a slither of wood...just play the thing that's enough!

I'm partial to a gloss ebony finish (always have been)...but rosewood would be very, very nice. Sadly it's become an endangered species, so is essentially no longer available. Bubinga is too busy for my taste.

As far as I know many makers presently offer rosewood finishes.

I think they use other wood some from South America to replicate rosewood.I know Palisander Roswood is one.Apart from that there are other types of wood that they also call "Rosewood"(but are not real Rosewood)
