My piece is considered "work in progress". It's a personal arrangement for piano started from March while my music lessons through Zoom have been ongoing. After working on the score for a few months, the final performance is less about wrong notes than making a good sound. Would have preferred to play the piece on an acoustic piano. Since I live in a building with only a DP, I don't always get the notes to sustain properly to get a legato sound. In the past I'd head to the local conservatory and use a practice piano for an hour just for recording. The option is not available until the middle of next year at the earliest so have to settle for a lower quality sound.

So today I managed to record something that I'm not proud of 😩 (but I guess not ashamed of either, considering I only started on it less then 3 weeks ago 😅). The problem is I can really only effectively practice 1 hour a day, any more than that I feel fatigue setting in. Decisions, decisions ...

There is nothing wrong with submitting a work-in-progress. Many times I have submitted something that I continued working on in hopes of making it better. You can explain what you are doing in the "additional info" section. I love reading what performers write about their submissions anyway. It gives a perspective to what they are playing.

Hi all,

It's with great pleasure that I'm returning to these recitals. It means a lot to me. It's going to be good to see old friends and meet new talents who, for sure, are around here.

After a 3 year break I decided to set aside all the masters and music genius that are known for their art, so I'm more in a "creative" phase without following any rules or models. I'm only playing for the pleasure and the good mood it brings me on.

I started doing that at fifty-five and I wish I had done it a lot sooner. Sam is right, enjoy your music. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law." (In art anyway)

C'mon, all the great composers were clearly wizards.

I thought those were liberal guesses. I just looked and we're up to 48. Maybe it will be 53 after all.

Good grief no, he was a revolting madman and his writing a curious and entertaining mixture of wisdom and wind, mostly the latter. However, the quote seems sound to me with respect to music.

This seems to have turned into a mini Bach recital. This is my first Bach submission for a recital and I am now anxious about how it will compare to the 10 other submissions so far.

So looking forward to lyricmudra’s Mendelssohn, I know he will make it special.

The deadline is getting closer by the hour. Guess mine is 1 of the longer pieces. If it wasn’t for the C-19 lockdown I wouldn’t attempt to play through this piece. I’ll probably play it again at a friend’s Christmas party next month.

Sometime ago a local radio station hosted a Classical piano contest 2 years in a row. The winner got prize money & rehearsal time with the local symphony orchestra. The 2 requirements were each submission had to be on an acoustic piano & each performer must be an amateur (does not earn an income from music). Some uploaded performances on DPs anyway.

Out of the hundreds of video submissions, there were many pieces commonly played by students. First the video quality varied due to the data upload limit like a long piece needed to be in lower resolution. And the level of playing varied from students playing “Minuet in G” to Mozart “Rondo alla Turca” to Beethoven Sonata, Chopin Etudes & everything in between. Since the judges picked only the best as the winner, the people who played for less than 2 years wouldn’t have a chance to reach the top 5 finalists. Think the competition should include at least 3 levels so that the lower level players had a chance to win something. Also, the piano competition tended to favor post-18th century music written specifically for piano. People who enjoy Baroque including Bach & Handel are in a different group altogether.

I was early this time (for me) but then I got another take today that I like so now I'm at the end as usual (at least the last time I checked)
