Is there anyone on the planet that can play/compose in this specific style better than him?(I would call it something like a virtuosic pop style). If you think there is, please post one of their videos since I haven't seen anyone who I think is in the same league but certainly don't know everyone who plays in this style.

I prefer him to Earl Wild, Peter Bence and Hiromi (who I think are terrific), and I think he makes pianists like Jarrod Radnich(whose playing I find boring and unimaginative) look like a beginner. When other classical pianists try to play in this style, I think it often sounds boring and like mindless note spinning. (Thinking of Denis Matsuev here)

And, in case you're not familiar with Cateen, I should mention he's a good enough classical pianist to get through several rounds in the most recent Chopin Competition.

Hi

He is amazing and seems, to my ear, to have a natural feel for stride and swing. Whether he can improvise isn't clear, but that doesn't matter either way.

Thanks for posting.

My favourite Gershwin performance is Earl Wild's The Man I Love.

Cheers

His 'style' is a mishmash of other styles, pastiche really - a bit of stride ragtime boogie boogie and some faux classical thrown in. He is obviously a fabulous pianist but does this approach lead to good music? It is like looking at a painting where the top half is a bit like picasso and the bottom half a bit like kandisnsky - no unity in the whole.

I think the mishmash is mostly when he does the Piece X in Y levels of difficulty videos. When he is playing something without the difficulty level approach there is generally less of the mixing of styles.
