This is bothering me 🤨 🤔 The album covers have the pianist posing by a Steinway D (?), but to me the piano doesn't sound like a Steinway at all, but like a Bechstein. At first I thought, nah, you're crazy! Clearly it says Steinway & Sons on the covers, why would they use a Bechstein? But then I realized, this was from the 80s and there was no Photoshop yet - so if the piano at the photo studio was a Steinway, it's doesn't necessarily mean it's the same piano at the recording studio. What do you think? BTW, the pianist had two more Bach albums with him posing with the Steinway on the cover.

The first video is unavailable but I listened to the Gigue and it sounds like a Steinway to me. A rather dull and colorless Steinway for sure with a really poor tenor. I also actively dislike the close recording approach typical of this period. Good playing.

Thanks for giving it a listen 😀 FWIW the first video is the first track from his Scriabin album.

Here is the same Gigue on a much more colorful piano, and frankly, better played. As an aside, probably still not the best piano for Bach, but Sokolov is so great so it sounds fine!
