I'm so excited! The 2002 Charles Walter W190 is THE ONE! The tone is beautiful. The touch is something I will learn to love since I'm coming from an upright to a grand. Different. I tried the 1907 Steinway O which was a strong contender, a couple of Ms and they just didn't come close enough to the CW. The O was close, nice sound, lighter touch but when I returned to the CW, the tone just hit me right. Michael had a M&H BB in his office. That was very nice but then I realized 7' was just not going to work!
The Schimmel had severe cracking in the finish on the side, about 12-15" wide section, which was just discovered. It can't be fixed. That didn't work for me. Also, I was surprised to find it was much too bright for me. (I don't think my Schimmel upright is that bright.)
I played a Kawai KG-2C, only$7K but it didn't do anything for me.
The Baldwin L was not the sound I preferred. I didn't play any Rs. Back to the CW!😄
And in all of the excitement, I don't think I played the Steinway L!🤦♀️
I am getting a 5 year warranty with it which covers soundboard, pinblock, and I'll find out what else. Is it really necessary to have my tuner go and inspect it??? What are your thoughts on that?
Thanks!

Inspection is for private sales only I think.
You pulled the trigger?? I’m so happy for you 🙂

Yes! If your tuner is a tech, definitely have them go in to inspect and appraise.you want a fair assessment from someone who works for you. Any honest dealer will welcome this, too (and won't give you guff about how "they've already done it in store.").

It is not a reflection on the piano nor the store to have an independent inspection ; the vast majority of PW members would suggest it. There was a recent forum post about a soundboard crack the buyer did not identify in the store and he did not have an inspection. It will be $$ we’ll spent

It’s so exciting that you found YOUR piano 😊 I didn’t realize that Del Fandrich designed the grands https://www.pianobuyer.com/brand/walter-charles-r/

As far as "hunts" go, yours was fairly quick - and you are very fortunate. Charles Walter grands are extremely rare in our neck of the woods as, to the best of my knowledge, we've never had an authorized dealer sell them new in AZ. Very wise - for your peace of mind - to have your tech check the piano out for you - although it may delay delivery slightly. Congratulations !!!!!!!!!

Yes, it was a short hunt however over the years I have visited different pianos and stored that info. And, of course, learning here on PW helped tremendously! I've been of fan of Charles Walter since I was in the Midwest and was deciding between that and the Schimmel when I bought my upright. At the time, I couldn't find a CW upright near me. I am extremely fortunate to find a Charles Walter grand here in AZ. I have reached out to my tech to go and inspect it. I hope he will make the trip out there! I'm in no hurry to receive it yet since I have no clue how to position it in my living room! LOL! Thanks for all of your help!

That's so exciting! Big congratulations. Your upright is going to feel like a little toy compared to the grand. I've never played CW but they're highly regarded, and have a classic, American sound! You'll love it.

Maybe someday I'll have the chance to play a Walter. I imagine them to be great instruments, and for you to have found a fantastic deal as well! How awesome. So happy for you.

Inspection is for private sales only I think. No, inspection is for anyone who wants to have more confidence in their purchase.
