Hey, sorry for posting such a bland question, but i am going round in circles, trying to find a new (midi) keyboard/e-piano.
basically: my main criteria is the key action! i want a good realistic piano key action, that is also sturdy and doesn't wear out after the first year
all other features, onboard sounds etc are not so important.
(i am mainly using a software piano when playing, so obviously i want the keyboard/piano to have good sensors too for key velocity etc)
i know that key action is a very personal thing, some people like one better than the other. but for me this is mainly about decent key action, that is also sturdy and lasts long.
as said in the headline: my price range would be roughly up to 1000.- (pounds/dollars/euros)
any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

You're going to get a plethora of answers here, but I can only give my personal viewpoint, as for the same reason, the keybed was the number one attraction for me when looking for a weighted controller to use only with vst's that is reasonably portable and relative economical. I opted for a Korg D1 because I happen to like the Korg RH3 in the more expensive products. Having used it for several years in a Kronos, I find it robust, and gives me the feel that I'm looking for. The D1 is known for being a cheaper digital piano that has a more high end keybed. Having said that, it has limited functionality compared to the bigger brother Korgs, as it doesn't support release velocity or aftertouch, but the key mechanics are basically the same, which is what I was interested in. Many folks will recommend the cheaper Kawai's too, which I agree with also, but is down to your own unique preference in the end. Some people criticize the dynamic control of the D1. I'm not sure the context for this, internal sounds? but for vst's I have no trouble with it's dynamics and velocity curves.

With under 1k, you have rather limited choice if you're going for a new keyboard, all keybed from brand like Yamaha, Casio, Roland and Kawai will do it and fulfill their job for you, but won't give you the satisfaction, personally I like Yahama GHS (strange, I know) and Roland PHA4 Standard. I'd rather get an used VPC board or some Roland board with PHA3/PHA4 Concert keybed (FP7X, FP80), they can easily be found for price under 1k in EU. If you're living in Asia, try looking for imported "grey" used DP container from JP, you may dig some real gold if you get lucky there, as I once found a mint CA65 and a CA67 in 2018 for about $700 each

Hello,
@weightedKey,
From a lengthy visit to a piano store, testing many actions from entry to hybrid just a few days ago, in your price category I'd say:
Good: ES110 Better: ES520; KDP120
Inbetween good and better: Roland FP-10; FP-30X
Best (by quite some margin): VPC1
All of this solely from an action standpoint.
Trying for yourself is essential!
Cheers and happy decision making,
HZ

argh, i cant remember what it was, but at some point i came to the conclusion that the vpc1 was not a good choice - but i cant remember what the reason was...
does it wear out quickly? quality control issues? it definitely meets the requirements, otherwise...

I have been eyeing it for a year or so and because of Covid could personally test it (twice) only in the last few weeks. Sadly, it isn't entirely what I'm looking for, but that hasn't got anything to do with the VPC1 itself and all with my own preferences -- which I'm now rediscovering. Cheers and happy decision making, HZ

Kawai VPC1 is around that price Used market, the MP7SE as available too. However, the VPC1 action is probably best for that price.

Kawai VPC1 is around that price I thought the price of the VPC1 was closer to $2,000, unless it’s being heavily discounted by retailers.

does it wear out quickly? quality control issues? it definitely meets the requirements, otherwise... Maybe it had something to do with some of the user reports about the quality of the pedal? There is also a separate thread about this.

Not the optimum choice when the MP11SE is available but at sub $1,500, there is no comparable choice for the pianist, certainly not at the $1,000 used price.

The potentionmeter is moved by gears and you can feel it. It's grindy and sluggish. At first i thought the pedal was damaged, so i ordered a second one. Same thing, no difference. It felt unusable to me and since you are locked into this pedal unit for a VPC1, i returned it and got a MP11SE instead.

Mine does not, and is a 2016 unit. Could be newer ones are worse?

Also look into sensor number .... that's in case it matters or not. And half-pedaling support .. if it matters ... even though it seems that not all the software associated with vst has the support for that.

VPC1? I think you are referring to the fact it uses these silicon pads underneath the pivots. Google Ravenscroft VPC for more details.
