I am wondering if any of you have had a similar experience...

I live in a secluded, wooded area and can play as loud as I want, whenever I want. The other day we visited my brother; his house sits about 20 feet from the sidewalk. After dinner and a glass of vino, I decided to knock-out a few tunes on their usually silent, little spinet. There was Gymnopedie #1, some Beatles tunes, and maybe the theme from "The Godfather", as I recall.

Well, my 10-yr-old nephew comes in the door and says "Uncle Bobby, there are 20 people out on the sidewalk listening". Sure, enough I cracked open the front door, gave my best victorian bow, and then ran for that 2nd glass of wine !!!

-cheers!!!

That's a nice story!

I'm not in such a secluded position as you, but I don't have direct neighbours. I've been used to playing with windows open, sometimes back door when it's hot.

Only very recently did my nearest neighbour tell me how much she enjoyed hearing me play - always nice to get an unexpected compliment!

I was relating a similar story at the memorial of one of my friends the other day. He had told me that as a boy, he and some other kids were playing in a field and they heard piano music, so they ran towards it. They looked over a fence and saw Rachmaninoff practicing inside the house! They stood and watched until he stopped, as if he had sensed that someone was watching him. He looked out of the window, but the kids had all ducked down behind the fence. So he went back to practicing, but looked out again, and then he saw them. He smiled and motioned for them to stay there, and he and his wife came out and invited the children in for snacks.

Many times when I have played the piano in my dorm, I will turn around to clapping from people (usually girls laugh ) who sat down during my practicing.

Nice story gaffster

I had an accidental concert myself too!

I walked into this big hotel, one of the most famous hotels in Cairo! I saw the piano out there in the lobby, i asked the pianist sitting if i can take it for a ride

So i played Maple leaf rag, and at that day i played with intense concentration so i was looking at the keyboard, but after i finished i was surprised by the applause coming from 20-30+ tourists in the lobby .. many of them even collected around the piano without me noticing laugh

I had a not-so-accidental concert like this at our hotel when I went to see WVU play FSU in the Gator Bowl a couple years ago. Piano man came on the loud speakers, and I play around with it and improvised on it. Everyone around me erupted with applause and I got free drinks all night. I topped it all off by playing "Country Roads" while all the WVU fans sang along with it. It was one of the most fun nights of my life. I think I may have made out with a 35 year old woman later, but I'm not sure....

Anyways, I tend to practice very late at the Creative Arts Center at WVU. I'll sometimes go into the concert hall and play on the smaller grand piano. The janitors will come in around 2:30 on some nights and listen to me play awhile.
