On my 1888 Ibach direct action grand I have this bit. It's not the backcheck (already has one) so what does it do? Ta very much!

It might help if you can give us a side view of the whole action (or schematic) and then we might be able to come up with an educated guess!

I've put the action back in now and don't especially want to take it out again - one thing that's so much easier on uprights (that and taking the keys out). Needless to say the 'bit' rests against the hammer butt on the other side from the jack.

There seems to be a lot.that you find it needless to say, like where and how it is attached. I suspect it is an auxiliary jack spring, possibly enabling some sort of repetition in the action. But with no more than a couple of lousy photos taken with no context, I cannot say for certain.

Thanks, sorry there's not much to go on. Below is the only other pic I took. The hammer butt nestles in between the jack and 'thing'. I'm guessing too it's a simpler repetition device.
